Pre-Primary Weekly Memo
8 August 2024
Dear Parents
Starting next week, and for the following two weeks, our little people will have the opportunity to embark on an exciting food adventure by making their own pizzas right in their classrooms! With all the ingredients provided by the school, the children will have fun rolling out the dough, selecting their favourite toppings, and creating their very own pizzas. This hands-on activity is a fantastic way for them to explore the joys of food and develop their culinary and fine motor skills. We can't wait to see their creativity in action and the delight on their faces as they enjoy their delicious creations!
Pizza, as we know it today, has its roots in Naples, Italy, where it first became popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Originally a simple dish enjoyed by the working class, traditional pizza was made with just a few ingredients—flatbread topped with tomatoes, cheese, and olive oil. Over time, pizza evolved and spread across the globe, becoming a beloved culinary staple with countless variations. The classic Margherita pizza, featuring tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, was named after Queen Margherita of Savoy in the late 1800s, symbolizing the colours of the Italian flag. Today, pizza is enjoyed worldwide in many different forms, but its origins in Italy continue to be celebrated and cherished.
Music Tree Visit
We are thrilled to share that the Music Tree Puppet Show was a great success. The children had a wonderful time and really enjoyed the different themes and activities. The shows were filled with fun stories, lively dances, and engaging percussion play, creating an enjoyable atmosphere. It was heartwarming to see how much the children enjoyed these experiences, and we are happy to have provided them with a joyful and educational event.
A Library Adventure
Oh my goodness! This book has been eaten! It has to be Nibbles, the book nibbling monster. What an adventure this treasure is! There are books inside the book, yes, really, and so much to discover and discuss as Nibbles finds his way in through the front cover, through every page and eventually out the back. This award-winning series is loads of fun. So join Nibbles as he chews his way through the pages, finds a dragon, makes a new friend and generally causes chaos. Can you catch him?

Parklands College Robotics Teams Haul in the Medals at the 2024 Western Cape World Robot Olympiad Events
An evening with Dr. Sian Proctor, geoscience professor, Afrofuturism artist, and trailblazing astronaut from SpaceX Inspiration4.
We had an unforgettable evening with Astronaut Dr. Sian Proctor at the Cape Town International Convention Centre during the IAU General Assembly 2024 on Wednesday night. We learnt about her groundbreaking journey as the first female, African American commercial astronaut to pilot a spaceship. From her captivating Afrofuturism art to her pioneering work in analog astronaut missions and sustainable space practices, Dr. Proctor inspired us all with a future of diversity and inclusion in space exploration.
We would like to thank the Sakhikamva Foundation for the donation of 50 tickets to our school so that our staff, learners and parents could enjoy this incredible event.
We would like to invite our parents to have a look at the IAU public events and register for anything of interest here https://astronomy2024.org/public/.

Monthly Cake
Each grade has the opportunity to contribute to their grade cake sale, and there is much excitement as the children eagerly look forward to their little monthly treat.
We request that items such as cupcakes, popcorn, crisps, muffins, etc. be sent to the class on their allocated cake sale date. We also recommend that your child spend no more than R2 at the cake sale to save some appetite for lunch! You are welcome to send the term’s money in advance (i.e. 3 x R2 coins) or send in the R2 on cake sale days in a sealed envelope/packet. Please ensure that items donated for cake sales do not contain nuts and that no sweets are sent in. We love healthy goodies, especially popcorn!
