Pre-Primary Weekly Memo
12 July 2024

Dear Parents

Thank you for joining the online lessons yesterday during the school closure. We deeply appreciate your understanding and support in ensuring your children's continued learning. The children thoroughly enjoyed seeing their teachers online from home. We loved seeing the little ones in their pyjamas, gathered in front of fireplaces, meeting family pets, and delighting in siblings joining us online too. It was a warm and wonderful experience that brought us all closer together.

We’re excited to share that our Pre-Primary staff recently completed paediatric first aid training at school on Monday, 8 July. This training helps us feel confident and ready to handle any emergencies, ensuring we can provide the best care for our wonderful little people.

Proudly Supported by Only Realty

Wizard of Oz Behind the Scenes.mov

In the theatre patrons who give donations to stage a show are called Angels. Sometimes Angels provide cash, goods or services and without their generous contributions the show would go on but without the sparkle that we have come to expect at a Parklands College Musical production. We would like to extend our gratitude and offer recognition to those individuals and companies that have been so generous in their support of our production of The Wizard of Oz.

Special mention goes to Grant Smee and Meghan Ladbrook from Only Realty for their donation towards the set. As Dorothy says at the end of the play 'There is no place like home', let Grant and his team find you your next home, this is a company with a big heart.

Just as Dorothy needed to realise that everything she ever needed was in her own backyard, the fabulous Zondagh family behind the companies Veldskoen and Plakkies donated 23 pairs of their fabulous shoes to the show. This company is offering a discount to all of the Parklands family through a QR code and we hope to see their comfortable Veldskoen on everyone's feet. They have a large range of shoes, including school shoes, that are all 100% locally manufactured. Driekie and the team are proudly South African and their success story inspires. They are a company with heaps of courage and boy has that paid off for them. Buy a pair or two, you won't want to wear anything else.

Last but by no means least we have to mention our fantastic set building Angel Derek Rocher, a man with an enormous brain, who translates my sketches and drawings into safe structures for the show to be performed upon. Derek gave up two weeks of leave from his job as Display Manager for Shoprite/ Checkers to create the elaborate set for The Wizard of Oz in record time. The learners assisting him have learnt a great deal of practical skills that he generously imparted earning him the title of Dearest Derek from the crew.

Thank you to these very special people for their amazing contributions to the show, we are very grateful and we can't wait for you to see the show that you have helped create.

With Gratitude

Catherine Dodders (The Wizard of Oz Director)

Bokkie Friday

We invite all our little people to join in Bokkie Fridays and come to school, dressed in their Springbok supporter’s clothing, as encouragement for the 2024 Incoming Series against Ireland and Portugal in July.

A Library Adventure

Welcome to the Winter quarter. This cold weather is simply perfect for cuddling with books! As promised, we are still looking at the very useful series by local author, Wendy Maartens, that can assist us in supporting little people who sometimes feel overwhelmed by ferocious feelings.

Starting a new school or even a new quarter after a long holiday can be intimidating at any age. In this story, Gugu is a kind little zebra who is feeling rather anxious as she faces the first day at a new school. However, the day gets better quickly as she is welcomed with kind words, a shared lunch and an incident with a rescued bird. It is also important to have those important conversations about respect and empathy as children grow up to be caring citizens. Look out for the Furry Friends series.

Monthly Cake

Each grade has the opportunity to contribute to their grade cake sale, and there is much excitement as the children eagerly look forward to their little monthly treat.

We request that items such as cupcakes, popcorn, crisps, muffins, etc. be sent to the class on their allocated cake sale date. We also recommend that your child spend no more than R2 at the cake sale to save some appetite for lunch! You are welcome to send the term’s money in advance (i.e. 3 x R2 coins) or send in the R2 on cake sale days in a sealed envelope/packet. Please ensure that items donated for cake sales do not contain nuts and that no sweets are sent in. We love healthy goodies, especially popcorn!
