Pre-Primary Weekly Memo
19 July 2024
Dear Parents
On Mandela Day, we celebrate the remarkable legacy of Nelson Mandela, a symbol of peace, justice, and reconciliation. This special day inspires us to instil the values of compassion, kindness, and service in our young learners, shaping them into caring and responsible individuals.
“It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.” - Nelson Mandela
In honour of Nelson Mandela, we are proud to support Hannah's Sanctuary for the Disabled this Mandela Day 2024.
Throughout July, we will be collecting nappies for special needs individuals. This initiative, organised by Adonai House Hannah's Sanctuary for the Disabled, aims to relieve some of the financial burdens on these families.
The biggest needs are children's pull-ups and adult diapers in sizes XS, Small, Medium, and Large. Any brand is welcome, and even one pack can make a significant difference!

In celebration of Mandela Day, the Grade 00's designed their own Mandela shirts during their STEAM Park lesson on Wednesday.
Keeping to the Mandela Day theme, the Grade 00's coloured their own Mandela shirts
STEAM Park enhances every child’s natural curiosity and desires to create, explore, and investigate the world of early science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) through creative play. With every ‘trip’ to STEAM Park, children grow their understanding of gears, motion, measurement, and solving problems together in a fun and engaging way.

WIZARD OF OZ: MATINEE PERFORMANCES: 20 & 27 JULY
In the theatre patrons who give donations to stage a show are called Angels. Sometimes Angels provide cash, goods or services and without their generous contributions the show would go on but without the sparkle that we have come to expect at a Parklands College Musical production. We would like to extend our gratitude and offer recognition to those individuals and companies that have been so generous in their support of our production of The Wizard of Oz.
Special mention goes to Grant Smee and Megan Ladbrook from Only Realty for their donation towards the set. As Dorothy says at the end of the play 'There is no place like home', let Grant and his team find you your next home, this is a company with a big heart.
Just as Dorothy needed to realise that everything she ever needed was in her own backyard, the fabulous Zondagh family behind the companies Veldskoen and Plakkies donated 23 pairs of their fabulous shoes to the show. This company is offering a discount to all of the Parklands family through a QR code and we hope to see their comfortable Veldskoen on everyone's feet. They have a large range of shoes, including school shoes, that are all 100% locally manufactured. Driekie and the team are proudly South African and their success story inspires. They are a company with heaps of courage and boy has that paid off for them. Buy a pair or two, you won't want to wear anything else.
Last but by no means least we have to mention our fantastic set building Angel Derek Rocher, a man with an enormous brain, who translates my sketches and drawings into safe structures for the show to be performed upon. Derek gave up two weeks of leave from his job as Display Manager for Shoprite/ Checkers to create the elaborate set for The Wizard of Oz in record time. The learners assisting him have learnt a great deal of practical skills that he generously imparted earning him the title of Dearest Derek from the crew.
Thank you to these very special people for their amazing contributions to the show, we are very grateful and we can't wait for you to see the show that you have helped create.
With Gratitude
Catherine Dodders (The Wizard of Oz Director)
A Library Adventure
THANK YOU TO OUR PUBLISHERS
On Tuesday three of our book-loving library staff attended a presentation by Penguin Random House, our local publishers. These wonderful people not only get excited about books as we do, but they are our first port of call for making contact with authors to visit our school. They also provide information on new publications every six months which is so valuable for planning our library programme and book shopping. Children’s literature is a vast industry, with Young Adult books being the fastest-growing genre worldwide. We were blown away by the sheer number of new books expected for the next few months.
A new arrival that is going to be loved by the Grade R’s, is Raven and Rover. This is the creation of Dr. Dino J. Martins, a well-known Kenyan artist, naturalist and evolutionary biologist. In this adventure, a wild dog pup and a smart crow become best buddies and teach the readers valuable lessons on friendship and loyalty. The quality of the artwork on glossy paper is wonderful. We also learn important facts about the fascinating lives of African Wild Dogs, also known as “painted dogs”, who have now become endangered.

Thank you to all who joined in Bokkie Friday as support to the Springboks Incoming Tour! We wish them all the best for the game against Portugal tomorrow.
Thank you to all the Grade R parents who braved the bitterly cold weather today to supply and assist during the monthly cake sale. The treats brightened and warmed all up, after a wet, grey and cold week.
We look forward to the individual photographs for the classes, which will be taken on Wednesday, 24 July (Grade 000, 00 and R) and Thursday, 25 July (Crackerjacks).
Enjoy the weekend.
